Ferncumbe Friday

🐣 Head’s Message 🐣

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a whirlwind of a final week we've had at Fabulous Ferncumbe! It's been a joy to witness the incredible buzz of activity and creativity throughout the building as our pupils have thrown themselves into a diverse array of enriching curriculum experiences.

Our Year 1 pupils have been busy little builders, constructing magnificent castles fit for royalty. Meanwhile, Year 2 transported themselves back in time, recreating the Great Fire of Warwick with a dramatic burning house display – thankfully, all under careful supervision! Years 3 and 4 have been threading their way through history too, picking up needles and thread for some marvellous sewing DT projects.

The corridors have been alive with the sound of music this week. Our 'Singtastic' event showcased the vocal talents of our budding performers, filling the air with joyous melodies. And speaking of music, I simply must mention the awe-inspiring African Drumming session led by our Year 1 pupils. Their concentration was remarkable, and the rhythms they produced were truly captivating. Well done to all involved!

As we approach the Easter break, it seems fitting that the finale of our term was our beautiful Easter service held in the woods. It was a sight to behold – our Year 1 pupils had created stunning natural art installations telling the story of Holy Week. The sun blessed us with its warm spring rays as we gathered to listen to a Bible verse read eloquently by our Year 5 pupils.

This outdoor service served as a poignant reminder of the true meaning of Easter – a time that brings the promise of new life and forgiveness for us all. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to such wonderful outdoor spaces, allowing us to connect with nature and our spiritual sides simultaneously.

As we part ways for the holiday, I encourage you all to take a moment to reflect on the real story of Easter. Whether through faith, family time, or simple moments of quiet contemplation, may you find renewal and joy in the days ahead.

I'd like to express my personal gratitude to our amazing staff, our wonderful pupils, and you, our supportive parents and carers. Your collective efforts make our school community truly special.

Wishing you all a peaceful and rejuvenating Easter break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for more adventures in learning next term.

Honiley - Warwick Tour

What an exciting time it's been for our Year 2 pupils! They embarked on a captivating journey through time, exploring the rich history of Warwick. With Miss Morris as their knowledgeable guide, our young historians traced the path of the Great Fire of Warwick, bringing their classroom learning vividly to life.

Their adventure took them to some of our town's most iconic locations. From the serene Mill Pool gardens to the majestic Warwick Castle and on to the historic Lord Leycester Hospital where the fire originated; our pupils were fully immersed in local history.

But it wasn't all serious study - we made sure to include a delightful stop at Oken Tea Rooms for some well-deserved refreshments!

Honiley Class - The Great Fire

Following our fascinating Great Fire of Warwick tour, we embarked on a hands-on project that's truly bringing history to life.

Our budding architects and historians have been busy constructing their very own Tudor-style houses. These miniature masterpieces aren't just for show - they were set to play a starring role in a rather dramatic reenactment.

Picture this: Year 2, gathered in the woods, their carefully crafted houses lined up, ready to relive a pivotal moment in Warwick's history. Yes, you've guessed it - we're talking about a recreation of the Great Fire itself!

The excitement was palpable as they watched their creations taken down by ferocious flames blown by the strong winds. Under the warm sunshine, they gained a vivid understanding of the devastation the fire would have caused all those years ago.

It's moments like this that make learning come alive. Our pupils aren't just reading about history - they're experiencing it, feeling it, and most importantly, remembering it.

Boundless Outdoors

Year 4 had a great time away at Boundless Outdoors on residential a couple of weeks ago. I was so impressed by the children’s attitude to facing new challenges and working together so well as they did so. Here are a few reflections from some members of the class:

We had a wonderful time at Boundless Outdoors working on our independence and our teamwork. My favourite activity was the low ropes and we did also did the punch trail, problem solving, orienteering, climbing towers and bush craft acitivities. I would really recommend it to other year groups! Hanna

Year four had an amazing time at Boundless in Malvern. My favourite activity was punch trail because it was a bit like orienteering outside in the dark. I really enjoyed the puzzle solving because we got to improve our teamwork which was one of our aims. Overall I really enjoyed our trip to Boundless and I can’t wait to go again for longer in year six! Atarah

We learnt some really important life skills and the climbing was really fun! I am really looking forward to going again. Dexter

The punch trail was my favourite. Orienteering in the dark was scary for some people but I loved it! Overall I am really excited for year 6. Bella

warwick Castle- Year One

What a wonderful time our Year One children had on their trip to Warwick Castle! They had a great time exploring the castle grounds where they were able to identify parts of a castle that they had been learning about in their topic lessons. The children also took part in a workshop where they had to listen very carefully to learn about what life was like in a Warwick Castle. Huge thanks to our parent volunteers who joined us on this trip!

Castles, Knights and Dragons!

This week Year One had a themed day in their classroom to celebrate the end of their topic, Castles, Knights and Dragons! The classroom was filled with ferocious dragons, brave knights and beautiful princesses! The children took part in a variety of activities linked to their topic. The highlight of the day had to be in the afternoon where we welcomed parents into school to make a castle with their children. The classroom was buzzing with creativity, teamwork and resilience! A great day had by all. Well done Year One!

Eco-Schools News

Wroxall Class have been busy these past few weeks, as we build up to our Green Flag application this Summer. As well as the usual litter picking, composting, garden tending and tree watering, we also planned our final assembly of the term. We introduced our Eco-Code, for display and inspiration in every classroom, talked about our bee visitors and the new eco-friendly soap, toilet paper and paper towel dispensers being installed across school…and quite a bit more! Another brave set of volunteers did an incredible job of spreading the message and encouraging us all to work as a team.

Bee Our Guest!

Last week, saw the aggregation of a large group of solitary bees on the field! Obviously enjoying the dusty, dry mound, they were noticed in large numbers, tending to their tiny nest holes in the spring sunshine. The area has been sectioned off while these harmless bees are nesting, and we will be able to play there again early into the Summer Term. With bees in serious decline across the UK, by almost a third, it’s nice to be able to add this to our nature calendar and hopefully they will return each year! By coincidence, Wroxall Class have been learning all about bees and making posters about their learning this week too. Mrs Jones even showed us some of her beekeeping kit!

Shrewley Sewing

Year 4 have enjoyed completing their DT project focussing on the use of textiles and fastenings. We designed book sleeves and created these using felt and our sewing skills. We chose either buttons, Velcro or ribbon to use as our fastenings and then added extra decoration and personalised touches to meet our design brief. I have been impressed with the children’s skills and their collaboration, helping each other with some of the trickier parts of the sewing!
