space junk competition

final date for entries friday 18th november

Please keep the competition entries coming in. It is great to hear how some of you are getting creative when trying to solve the messy problem of millions of bits of space debris orbiting Earth. As well as being our responsibility to clear up, fragments as small as a fleck of paint can break windows on space shuttles!

What kind of ‘grabber’ or net could you use? How would you get it up there? How would you get it home?

We understand that home life is really busy, so we would like to open the entries to scientific drawings as well as models. Neatly drawn diagrams, with labels, showing one big structure, or step by step ideas would be fantastic too. In Reception/Year 1, children may like to make a model with plasticine or Lego and we can talk to them about a photo they send in! We will also be allocating next week’s homework slot to the project as well. Thank you for your support and we look forward to more great ideas.

This half-term’s Worship value: Compassion

This half-term we are thinking about the value of Compassion during our Worship. Do discuss with your child what they have been discussing and thinking about in school - I am constantly in awe of their reflections, ideas and feedback!

Year 4’s word cloud filled with words the children associated with our new worship value, compassion.

Message from School Council

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for the food donations given to us at the Harvest Festival. We are also grateful for the money raised (approximately £118). School Council decided that this generous donation is going to NHS Swift Charity at Warwick Hospital. This charity will provide Christmas festivities to those unable to leave hospital at this joyous time of year.

Once again thank you for the donations,

Oliver Ware

School Council Publicity Officer

We are delighted to share that Ferncumbe has once again been awarded the Music Mark status for 2022 - 2023 in recognition of the high value the school places on Music, and our ongoing commitment to providing an excellent music education and variety of opportunities for all our pupils.

Shoebox appeal

Once again The Ferncumbe Family will be supporting the Helping Hands charity, based in Leamington, with their Christmas shoebox appeal. Please see their poster below for information on what to include/box type, etc. We would also like to offer the opportunity for you to donate single items from the following list for us to contribute towards shared boxes in school. If anyone has shoeboxes that are surplus to your requirements, please do let Miss Forbes know or send them into school! The deadline for the shoebox collection is Friday 1st December. Please ensure your box/donations are in school on or before this date. Thank you.

Haseley class

Haseley class learnt so much about the past and Victorian toys from their trip to the fantastic St. John’s Museum in Warwick. We got to dress up as members of two different households and we compared the amount of servants they had. We also got to play with a variety of different toys from different eras and we explored what materials they were made from. Haseley class had a super day!

Honiley class

Year 2 had a fantastic time when they visited St John’s Museum before half term. They spent some time in a Victorian classroom where they got to dress up as Victorian children and were taught by a strict Victorian teacher! They practised their handwriting on using slate and chalk and went outside for drill. The children also helped out in the laundry room where they made their own soap powder and washed some clothes. Great job Year 2!

Miss Constable

Rowington Class

We have been learning all about Stone Henge in Year 3 this week. We have explored theories as to why they built the incredible monument and decided on our favourites. We have also created our own Stone Henge silhouettes.

Lowsonford Class

In Lowsonford class, the children are enjoying using different art materials to create pictures of Viking longships. They have used masking fluid to prevent the water-colour wash going onto the longship. They have added watercolours to create a background for the sky, sea and landscape. After that, they used pastels to add the longship. They are now ready to add the waves….watch this space for our finished masterpieces!

Hatton Class

Hatton Class had a super afternoon on our Pumpkin Picking Trip before half term. Tristan the Tractor came to pick us up from school and we had a bumpy ride along the lanes. When we arrived in the pumpkin field we were all allowed to choose a pumpkin to take home. We also had time to visit the guinea pigs and some of the creatures with tails and scales. Huge thanks to Richard and Wiz from Hatton for a wonderful afternoon in the autumn sunshine and to the parents who accompanied us on the children's first school trip.

Calling all enthusiastic singers!

We are fortunate that Oliver Hancock, Director of Music at St. Mary’s, is coming to Ferncumbe to lead an assembly on Monday 21st November. He will be on the lookout for new ‘Chorister’ recruits!

If your child is in Key Stage 2 and possibly interested in joining, do show them the details in the flyer below and have a chat with them. We have had pupils from Ferncumbe join the choirs before, and it would be great to be represented again; being a member really does offer a wealth of wonderful opportunities.

With very best wishes for a lovely weekend… enjoy the fireworks!
